Market Mood Today
The market is likely to remain flat to weak, range-bound, and driven by stock-specific action. After yesterday’s sharp decline, a weak rupee (above 91), and continued FII selling, overall sentiment remains cautious. However, DII buying could provide support on declines. GIFT Nifty is trading flat around 25,920, indicating a muted to flat opening bias for Nifty.
Global Market Mood
US markets closed mixed. The S&P 500 declined for the third consecutive session, ending down 0.24%, while the Dow Jones fell 0.62%. The Nasdaq, however, managed to close mildly higher, up 0.23%, amid data-driven uncertainty. Asia-Pacific markets are mostly lower today as investors await Japan’s trade data and inflation readings from Europe and the UK. Overall, global cues remain mildly negative to cautious.
What to Watch Today
Large Banks & Financials:
Private banks were among the weakest performers in the previous session. Stocks such as ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and HDFC Bank may see active intraday moves, with both pullback and further downside possibilities.
Consumption / FMCG & Consumer Durables:
Stocks like Titan, Tata Consumer, and other consumption names showed resilience in the last session. Defensive segments may witness stock-specific strength in a risk-off environment.
IT & Export-Oriented Stocks:
A mixed US technology outlook combined with a weak rupee could trigger selective buying and selling in IT and export-focused stocks.
(The exact “in-action” stocks will become clearer after the market opens; the above segments highlight areas with higher probability of movement.)
FII–DII Activity
On 16 December, FIIs were heavy net sellers in the cash market, selling ₹2,381.9 crore, while DIIs provided partial support with net buying of ₹1,077.5 crore. This resulted in a net institutional outflow of around ₹1,300 crore, explaining the cautious market tone. On a month-to-date basis for December, FIIs are net sellers of about ₹23,456 crore, while DIIs remain strong net buyers at approximately ₹42,840 crore, highlighting visible domestic support against global selling pressure.
Sector Focus / News Today
Financials & Banks:
Ongoing FII outflows and a weak rupee may keep pressure on private banks and financial services stocks. However, valuation-driven selective accumulation on dips cannot be ruled out.
Realty & Metals:
These sectors were major laggards in the previous session, and in a risk-off environment, sentiment in cyclical sectors may remain subdued.
Media & Consumer Durables:
These sectors ended mildly positive in the last session and may continue to show relative outperformance in a cautious market.
Macro Focus
Key macro variables to track include the rupee’s movement, FII flows, India–US trade uncertainty, and global inflation data from the UK and Eurozone, all of which will influence overall risk appetite.
